Third mystery candidate could be in play for 49ers [report]

Kyle Shanahan and GM candidates George Paton and Terry McDonough concluded their interviews with Jed York and the 49ers brass on Saturday in Atlanta.

And according to CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, a decision on the GM is expected as early next week. But there is reportedly a third mystery candidate.

Jason La Canfora floated out Mark Dominik’s name as a potential candidate earlier last week, and Maiocco said the 49ers have discussed his name, but no formal interview was setup.

Dominik made an appearance on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland earlier in the week, and spoke about the 49ers.

“Kyle was with me back in Tampa Bay in 2005. Kyle and I became friends then,” Dominik said. “And certainly, have appreciated what he’s been able to do in Atlanta with a lot of talent. Let’s be honest, they’ve done a great job of building that football team. They finished it off by ceiling the line.

“I expect him to have success. Because I think in San Francisco, where he’s going, I think there’s an understanding of where that franchise is from a talent perspective.”

The bottom line: This is Kyle Shanahan’s decision, not York or Paraag Marathe’s. Even though Shanahan is widely believed to be the strongest coaching candidate, the 49ers have backed themselves and must bow to his demands. As long as Shanahan is in tow, there is no rush to make this decision.

Don’t be surprised if we hear the team is meeting with Dominik at some point early next week. The 49ers are allowed no contact with Shanahan this week during the Super Bowl in Houston.
