With the Giants over the luxury tax in overall payroll, general manager Bobby Evans has stated that most of the club’s acquisitions this offseason will likely be of the non-roster invitee variety, after spending big on closer Mark Melancon.
Rollins, 38, is 10 years removed from his MVP campaign with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2007, and only played 41 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2016 before being designated for assignment in his 18th season. The Bay Area native spent 15 years with the Phillies and last played a full season in 2015 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Rollins will receive a base salary of $1 million if he plays on the Giants all season, and will likely be competing with second baseman Kelby Tomlinson and utility infielder Ehire Adrianza for a roster spot.
Rollins is a three-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glover and is the Phillies all-time hits leader.
