The 49ers honored Eddie DeBartolo on Sunday as part of his Hall of Fame induction. The weather at Levi’s Stadium was as dark as this season has been for many 49ers fans.
Three-time Super Bowl champion Brent Jones played for the legendary 49ers owner and joined Tolbert and Lund to discuss what the current 49ers ownership could learn from its Hall of Fame past.
“Eddie was tremendously generous, he was always there but he had an expectation level,” Jones said. “And that expectation was that we were going to give you all the tools necessary to win and that was including paying assistant coaches, having the right GM on the spot and making sure everyone was accountable for their performance.”
Jones also believes that the 49ers just don’t have enough pieces yet to come close to winning anytime soon.
“We’re going to have so many holes to fill for a couple years, and that’s the perfect scenario. So you’ve got to get things together on the personnel side,” Jones said.
The quarterback position is also a big point of emphasis to the fan base. Jones did not mince words when talking about Colin Kaepernick.
“The time and attention off the field is a huge distraction,” Jones said. “When you are more worried about what T-shirt you are wearing to the game then you are about how you play when your team has lost nine in a row, I have a problem with that.”
