49ers head coach Chip Kelly joined Murph and Mac on Monday morning, following the 49ers ninth consecutive loss of the season on Sunday, tying the franchise record.
No doubt frustrated by his team’s fortunes, Kelly wasn’t exactly gregarious when fielding Brian Murphy’s questions throughout the interview, which touched on a variety of topics.
Kelly started by denying reports that Patriot fans were loudly cheering and chanting throughout Sunday’s 30-17 loss.
“I don’t think it was very loud to be honest with you, so I don’t think we even noticed it,” Kelly said.
Kelly was then asked about comments he made after the game regarding the fact that the 49ers were not equipped to come from behind by throwing on every down, something many took as a veiled slight at general manager Trent Baalke’s roster construction.
Kelly wasn’t having it.
“That’s ludicrous,” Kelly said. “You can look at our team. We’re not built to throw the ball 50 times a game. That’s not an indictment of anybody in personnel, that’s just we’re not built to throw the ball 50 times a game. We’re a run, play-action football team. We have a running quarterback, we have a talented running back and we think we’re good up front in the run game and that’s part of it. Just when you get into a game where you’re going to throw it every single down, we don’t have that type of lineup.
Kelly was even less amused with a question regarding rumors that he is eyeing a return to the college ranks at the end of the season, saying he is largely disinterested in what the media thinks.
“I don’t really care, and I don’t care about a media game so I guess that gives you guys good things to talk about. Tell them I’m going to get into baseball.”
When asked in general about how he is holding up during the poor run of form, Kelly tried to maintain a positive outlook.
“It’s all part of the deal,” Kelly said “Take the good with the bad, take the bad with the good and you’ve got to come to work with a positive attitude and try to get better and lets continue to work with these guys. Our players have been fantastic through this whole thing. That’s the fun part about getting here everyday is you get a bunch of good guys that you really want to work with. We’ll continue to work at it.”
