Bruce Bochy filled out his coaching staff on Monday, with the Giants making official the hirings of new third-base coach Phil Nevin and first-base coach Jose Alguacil.

The addition of Nevin to the coaching staff is especially impressive, considering the former third baseman was a strong candidate to fill the managerial vacancy for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and has an impressive track record managing at the Triple-A level.

Bochy and Nevin also have a strong relationship from their time with San Diego Padres, where Bochy helped turn Nevin into an All-Star in 2001. Nevin said that the Giants skipper was the first professional manager that really believed in him.

Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper joined the Murph and Mac show on Wednesday morning, and said that Nevin is not only an impressive candidate, but that the Giants may be looking at him as a possible successor to his former manager.

“He and Bochy are really close, much like (Tim) Flannery and Bochy who had some history,” said Kuiper. “I really think Nevin had that job in Arizona, the managing job, but then they started making changes in the front office and he really became available then. I think Boch has looked at Nevin as a guy he would eventually want on his staff.”

“If he’s that great of a candidate to manage, and everybody says he is, maybe you’re looking at the guy that eventually down the road could replace Bruce Bochy. That may be 10 years from now, but you get a guy in the organization for a while, and he sees how things work in this organization. They say that he’s got a shot to be a real good manager. Maybe, well see.”
