Just a day after it was reported that former All-Star third-baseman Phil Nevin would be joining Bruce Bochy’s staff as the team’s new third-base coach, the San Francisco Giants announced on Monday that Sacramento Rivercats manager Joe Alguacil is being promoted to the big league club to take over duties as the team’s first-base coach.

Alguacil replaces former first-base coach Bill Hayes who along with former third-base coach Roberto Kelly was fired at the end of the 2016 season.

A native of Venezuela, Aguacil, 43, spent six seasons (1993-98) as an infielder in the Giants’ farm system, and has risen up the ranks as a coach in the organization, starting off as a roving instructor in 2007. Alguacil spent eight seasons in that capacity before being promoted to manager of the Double-A richmond Flying Squirrels in 2015, before moving up to Sacramento last season.

“We are very pleased to add both Jose and Phil to the Major League coaching staff. They are well-respected and will serve in key roles for us,” general manager Bobby Evans said in a press release. “They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to Bochy’s staff, and we look forward to having them on the Major League club.”

The appointment of Alguacil and Nevin completes Bochy’s coaching staff for the 2017 season. They will join Ron Wotus (bench coach), Dave Righetti (pitching coach), Mark Gardner (bullpen coach), Hensley Meulens (hitting coach) and Steve Decker (assistant hitting coach).
