After adding Kevin Durant to their already juggernaut outfit, there’s little doubt that the Golden State Warriors enter 2016-17 season as the consensus villains of the NBA. That title doesn’t exactly sit well with Warriors executive Bob Myers, who told Gary and Larry on Friday that much of the resentment directed toward Golden State comes from a false perception that the team is a dynasty.
“We won one championship and then we lost,” Myers said. “I think there’s this perception that we have had this glorious run. We haven’t. We won one championship and hopefully we can win more. I do think sometimes people are resentful when you’re perceived to be at the top of something.”
It’s somewhat ironic to think of the Warriors in terms of an “evil empire” a la the New York Yankees, considering they were one of the most unsuccessful franchises in NBA history for the better part of three decades.
“When you look at what other organizations and other sports have done, it seems like people are acting as if we’ve been at the top of this mountain for a long time,” Myers continued. “You know that we’ve had this great run. If you think about it’s been a couple years.”
With the addition of Kevin Durant, however, that run is likely to last much longer, and the hate directed towards the Warriors will only grow stronger.
