At the team’s year end press conference on Thursday, Giants general manager Bobby Evans announced the team will be making two changes on the coaching staff.
Both first base coach Bill Hayes and third base coach Roberto Kelly have been fired, and will be replaced.
“We feel like we need to grow our leadership on the field, how we approach our base running,” Evans said. “First-to-third, second-to-home. We feel we can get better there.”
Hayes served as the Giants’ bullpen catcher from 2003-2014. He was promoted to first base coach in 2015. Kelly was hired by the organization in 2007 and also served as a hitting instructor. The Giants averaged 0.49 steals per game in 2016, ranking 14th in the league.
Evans wouldn’t comment on whether Hayes and Kelly would be reassigned to different roles within the organization.
CSN Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic is reporting he heard rumors that the pair of coaches were in trouble earlier in the season.
