After being left off the wild-card roster due to a nagging hamstring injury, third baseman Eduardo Nunez is still not healthy enough to play, but has been named to the Giants’ NLDS roster ahead of tonight’s Game 1 against the Chicago Cubs.
Manager Bruce Bochy said yesterday that while Nunez will not be an option in Game 1, his hope is that he will be available to contribute in some way later in the series.
Nunez is one of three changes Bochy made to the 25-man group group that was available for the NL Wild Card game. Starting pitchers Matt Moore and Ty Blach were also added in place of shortstop Ehire Adrianza, outfielder Jarrett Parker and reliever Steven Okert. Moore and Blach were left off the the wild-card roster as they had started and gone deep in the Giants’ final two regular season games.
Okert being left off is maybe the biggest surprise, as the left-hander was stellar in his in nine appearances after his Sept. 1 call-up, posting a 1.13 ERA and averaging a strikeout per inning. Blach’s dominant start against the Dodgers last weekend likely gave him the edge, and gives Bochy a contingency plan should one of his starters get knocked out of a game early.
The Giants are bringing 12 pitchers and 13 position players.
