Anthony Davis announces retirement, again

For the umpteenth time, Anthony Davis has announced his retirement from the NFL.

The 49ers released a one sentence statement to confirm the news. It’s semi-breaking news, but then again, it really isn’t.

Davis originally retired from the NFL abruptly in the summer of 2015. He tweeted critical things about the organization this spring — specifically about GM Trent Baalke. Then he officially un-retired right before training camp, and had a strong summer transitioning to right guard. Or so we thought.

A few days before Week 1, Chip Kelly told him he wouldn’t be starting at right guard, and Davis announced his retirement again. A day later, Kelly and Davis said it was a miscommunication.

Then Davis allegedly suffered a concussion in practice one day prior to the 49ers leaving for their Week 2 game against the Panthers.

A week later, Davis has retired again at 26 years old.

Good riddance. Chip Kelly and the 49ers have enough on their plates than to appease the needs of an offensive lineman who isn’t committed to the sport or his teammates.

The good news for the 49ers is that the team is leading the NFL in sacks allowed (2) through three weeks. Pass protection has been a strength, although some things need to be fine-tuned to help the running game.

Davis, a first round pick from the 2010 NFL Draft, could no longer crack the starting lineup. There’s little doubting riding the bench played a major factor in his retirement this time around,
