Ty Blach has been the most impressive young pitcher for the Giants in the month of September, and Sunday afternoon he’ll be rewarded with his first ever Major League Start.
According the Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, manager Bruce Bochy announced the 25-year-old Blach will make the spot start against San Diego, replacing the injured Johnny Cueto who is still recovering from a Grade 1 groin strain.
Since being called up on September 1st, Blach has been lights out, throwing 66 pitches in six innings of relief while allowing just one hit.
Born and raised in Colorado, Blach attended Creighton University before being selected by the Giants in the fifth round of the 2012 draft. The left-hander is coming off his best minor league season, posting 3.43 ERA (team best amongst starting pitchers) in 26 starts for the Triple-A Sacramento Rivercats.
Blach will face San Diego’s Clayton Richard (2.98 ERA) who has been the Padres’ best starter since being acquired in a midseason trade. First pitch is at 1:40 on KNBR 680.
