Boston is tossing up a Hail Mary in an attempt to lure Kevin Durant to town.
Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady is accompanying Celtics management and several players in The Hamptons to recruit Durant to play in Boston. The city has won eight championships since 2001, an astounding and impressive number that surely will be discussed on Saturday.
The Thunder, Warriors, Clippers and Spurs have already met with Durant. Pat Riley and the Heat will meet with him on Sunday before the Thunder get one last crack to seduce their hometown hero.
It’s anybody’s best guess who ranks where in the hunt for Durant. All of the teams listed above are in a holding pattern in free agency, and have not signed one new player to their respective rosters. The Celtics are reportedly a finalist to sign Al Horford.
As for the Warriors, Harrison Barnes still has not been publicly offered a deal by the 76ers. It seems the 24-year-old forward remains Golden State’s backup plan should the team fail in their quest to land Durant. Reported big men targets Pau Gasol, David West and Andrew Nicholson are all still free agents. A Barnes contract extension would be expected to be similar to Bradley Beal’s in Washington — five-years, $133 million.
After the meeting with KD on Friday, Andre Iguodala (a surprise attendee at the gathering in The Hamptons) released a series of cryptic tweets, and the Warriors went on their way. Steph Curry is currently in Chicago for a wedding.
Many have criticized the Brady move on Twitter as being desperate, but if the Celtics are selling Boston the city to Durant, what better ambassador to have along with you? They better be careful about trashing Oklahoma City. But then again, that might be their whole game plan: Come to a city known for titles and lift us back up to the top. Alongside Brad Stephens and Horford, it might make Durant pause and think.
