Why he makes sense for the Warriors
Depending on how much money Mahinmi wants, he could be a perfect backup true center behind Andrew Bogut next year if Festus Ezeli leaves in free agency. He improved drastically last season, setting career high numbers almost across the board, and showed in the playoffs that the regular season was no fluke. Mahinmi averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per 36 minutes, and also posted a career high in blocks. This is a veteran player with playoff experience, but a player who nonetheless is clearly on the rise, and could get even better over the next year or two.
Why he doesn’t make sense for the Warriors:
Mahinmi is in a good situation in Indiana, and probably feels some loyalty to the team that gave him his first big chance after spending time as a reserve for Dallas and San Antonio. Even if he does want to go elsewhere though, Mahinmi started all 71 games he played in last year, so he may be hesitant to go somewhere he’d be 7th or 8th in a rotation, as he would likely be with Golden State.
