SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The San Francisco Giants announced tonight that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Williams Jerez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for right-handed pitcher Chris Stratton.
Jerez, 26, made his big league debut with the Angels last season, making 17 relief appearances. He appeared in eight exhibition games with Los Angeles-AL this year, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings. Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 2011 amateur draft, the Santiago, Dominican Republic native has posted a career ERA of 3.55 in 171 minor league relief outings.
Stratton, 28, has appeared in the Majors with San Francisco in each of the last three seasons, going 15-14 with a 4.63 ERA in 48 games (36 starts). He’s gone 1-2 with a 4.60 ERA in six spring outings.
Additionally, the Giants have optioned LHP Andrew Suarez to the minors.
