After a promising rookie campaign, it appears as if Adrian Colbert’s disappointing 2018 season has come to an end.
Kyle Shanahan said the safety will be placed on the injured reserve after sustaining a high-ankle sprain in Sunday’s loss to the Rams, an injury that led the second-year player to be carted off the field. A stint on the IR would theoretically make Colbert available after eight weeks, but Shanahan said that he’s probably not a candidate to return this season.
Placing Colbert on the IR allowed the 49ers to re-sign Tom Savage on Monday. Rookie D.J. Reed is expected to take Colbert’s place in the starting lineup.

Colbert sustained the injury on an awkward fall during the third quarter. It’s a rough end to a rough season for Colbert, who is currently ranked as the worst starting safety in the NFL, by a significant margin, according to Pro Football Focus.
