SAN FRANCISCO — Since Evan Longoria went down with a fractured left metacarpal bone on June 14 against the Miami Marlins, the Giants have deployed a combination of Pablo Sandoval and Alen Hanson at third while their All-Star third baseman patiently recovered from his injury.
As a few weeks have now passed since Longoria suffered the injury, he has now progressed to doing some basic baseball activity for the first time. Bruce Bochy updated Longoria’s recovery timeline as well as the activities he has been partaking in prior to Friday’s game.
“Yeah, he’s doing some really light baseball activities,” Bochy said. “A little grounders. We put a bat in his hand, but really it’ll be the end of this weekend that you’ll see him on the field, when we start ramping it up a little bit.”
He also projected when Longoria could return to the team in a full capacity.
“I think we’re looking at the first week of August, in that area,” Bochy said.
Bochy also noted that Hunter Strickland could make his return to the club not long after Longoria. Strickland has been out since June 18 after breaking his hand while punching a door amid frustration at himself for blowing a save against the Marlins.
“I think that’s about right … I think maybe second week (of August) or so. He’s going to take a little bit longer,” Bochy said.
