For much of last season, the San Francisco 49ers saw Kirk Cousins as a possible solution to their quarterback needs. Ever since he was promoted to full-time starter in 2015, Cousins served the Washington Redskins well, leading them to the playoffs in 2015.
However, everything changed when the 49ers traded for Jimmy Garoppolo in October. The idea that Cousins would play in San Francisco in 2018 was all but scratched after Garoppolo finished the season on five-game winning streak.
Nonetheless, Cousins, currently on the free agent market and could be franchise tagged by Washington for the third straight year, told Gary & Larry on Tuesday afternoon that he hopes for the best for the 49ers and Garoppolo’s future.

“[I’m] so happy for them,” Cousins said. “They seem to have found their guy and that’s a great thing. I think they know what they’re doing and have a good plan in place to make sure he’s around. So, happy for them and happy for Jimmy.”
Over the last three seasons, Cousins has started every game for Washington. He led the league with a 69.8 completion percentage in 2015, which contributed to his 67 completion percentage since taking over as start quarterback. Cousins also led Washington to a first-place finish in the NFC East in 2015, but lost the Wild Card game to the Green Bay Packers.
Bound for a 7-9 season, Cousins bumped Washington to 3-2 with a 26-24 victory against the 49ers last October. Just over two weeks later, the 49ers made the trade that brought Garoppolo to San Francisco and turned their season around.
Although Cousins’ immediate future is still up in the air, he appears to have come to terms with the fact that the path he’s on isn’t headed for San Francisco.
“I’ve come to learn to expect that this league changes,” Cousins said. “You never know what’s coming next and it’s hard to plan too far down the road. You just have to keep an open mind. I also just really trust the Lord’s plan for my life. I really take peace in the fact that, I wouldn’t have played on a one-year deal over multiple years if I hadn’t trusted that the Lord has got a plan and rely on him and follow him wherever he leads.
