SAN FRANCISCO – Giants Trainer Dave Groeschner has confirmed that Madison Bumgarner did in fact tear his AC joint in his left shoulder during his dirt bike accident in Denver, Colorado.
According to Andrew Baggarly of the Bay Area News Group, that means Bumgarner will be out of the starting rotation for at least three more months.
Giants confirmed Grade 2 sprain for Bumgarner. Two months of rehab and 3-4 weeks to rebuild arm strength.

If those dates hold true, that would put Bumgarner’s return somewhere between July 19-26.
San Francisco has a homestand from July 17 to July 26, playing host to the Indians, Padres, and Pirates in that order. Following that 10 game stretch at home, the Giants travel to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers.
The Giants were unsure as to whether Bumgarner suffered a Grade 1 sprain (sprained ligament, but no tearing) or Grade 2 sprain (slight tearing of ligament), but Friday the team revealed it was the latter.
The pitcher was evaluated by the team’s orthopedist Dr. Ken Akizuki, as well as 49ers doctor Tim McAdams. They both concluded that even though Bumgarner suffered a Grade 2 sprain, he would not need surgery.
We’ll continue to follow Bumgarner’s injury progress and bring you developments as they happen.
